Building a Legacy
100+ Years of USG Innovation
USG's story is one of continuous innovation, driven by a commitment to building a better world. From humble beginnings to global leadership, we've spent more than a century developing groundbreaking building solutions that shape the way we live, work, and play.
1900s: The Foundation of an Industry Leader
- In 1902, 30 independent gypsum companies merged to form the United States Gypsum Company, consolidating resources and expertise to create a new industry powerhouse.
- Early product development included Pyrobar, a gypsum-based fireproof tile, and the Sackett Board, a panel made of multiple layers of plaster and paper – after acquiring the Sackett Plaster Board Company in 1909.
1910s: The Birth of an Icon: Sheetrock®
- A manufacturing breakthrough led to the creation of Sheetrock® brand panels, revolutionizing interior wall construction with its single-layer design and smooth, fire-resistant surface.
1920s - 1960s: Expansion and Diversification
- USG experienced significant growth, expanding into Canada (and linking operations via fleet steamers on the Atlantic Ocean), developing new product lines like insulation board and acoustical ceiling panels and venturing into international markets.
- The 1933-34 World's Fair in Chicago featured buildings made almost entirely out of Sheetrock panels, leading to the brand's first major advertising campaign.
- In the late 1940s, the proliferation of tract housing developments led to high demand for USG products.
- The 1950s and 1960s saw international expansion into the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America, as well as diversification into cement, paint, and mica products.
1970s - 1990s: Adapting to Change, Leading with Innovation
- USG navigated economic shifts and changing market demands with innovative solutions, including gypsum cavity shaft wall systems for taller buildings and the acquisition of Donn® Incorporated, a leader in ceiling suspension systems. USG also offered new water construction solutions through Durock® Brand Cement Board. In the 1990s, the company introduced a new gypsum/cellulose product family called Fiberock® Brand Panels.
- The company also expanded into the distribution business with the creation of L&W Supply Corporation, which was a highly valued part of the USG portfolio until it was sold to ABC Supply in 2016.
2000s - Present: Building a Sustainable Future
- USG continues to lead the building materials industry, embracing new technologies, expanding into emerging markets, and prioritizing sustainable building practices.
- In 2019, USG joined the Knauf Group, the world's largest gypsum manufacturer with a diverse product portfolio and global footprint. As part of Knauf, USG is even better positioned to meet customers' needs.
