Time Savings
United Airlines Reservation Center Chicago, IL
Illinois Roofing, a division of the Tecta America Corporation, the country’sleading roofing contractor, was tasked with reroofing the United AirlinesReservation Center, a 60,000-square-foot building. As expected, a roof boardwas included in the project specifications to give the roof assembly addedstrength and sustainability. The brand of roof board selected, however, wouldbe critical to the success of the project, as this component had to meet manyperformance requirements.
Structural
Buzzard Hall Charleston, Illinois
The $11.4 million renovation of Buzzard Hall on the Eastern Illinois University campus, Charleston, Illinois, added much-needed functional features while updating the building’s appearance. Buzzard Hall is the home of the 10,000-student university’s College of Education, departments of journalism and radio and television, and student publications. As a result of the two-year project, the structure now has modern classrooms, a new, two-story glass entry, an open two-story interior hub, and the largest auditorium on campus.
Fire Construction
Savvis Senter (Formerly Kiel Center) St. Louis
The Kiel Center is the center of attention in downtown St. Louis. The $135 million arena can seat up to 20,000 spectators and is the home of the St. Louis Blues hockey team. The multi-functional facility can also accommodate basketball, soccer, concerts, ice shows and other events. While the facility was completed ahead of schedule, its size and variety of functions created several design problems.
Impact Resistance
Schools Southhaven, MS
The time, labor, and expense of masonry construction can add up to a weighty load. That’s why many architects of public and private schools are switching to abuse-resistant wall panels. These panels give the necessary abuse resistance required for institutional applications, while cutting construction costs and providing design versatility. Two newly built schools—one in Mississippi, the other in Maryland—show how abuse-resistant panels can be more practical than masonry.
Sound Construction
Morton Elementary School Hammond, IN
An important architectural feature, the school’s entrance corridor has an arched ceiling that starts outside the building and runs through the entrance all the way to the administration office area. “The area has hard floors and glass and brick walls, so it would be very noisy when elementary school children are arriving at school or going home from school,” said John F. Swindell of Fanning/Howey Assoc. Inc., Michigan City, Indiana, in describing Morton Elementary School in Hammond, Indiana. “Our task was to find a way to introduce some sound absorption into the space without compromising the architecture—that meant putting something on the arched drywall ceiling that would blend with the design, be monolithic and attractive in appearance, and yet provide some sound absorption.
